My Professional Philosophy

As an Early Childhood Professional, I believe:

That each child is a unique individual and has the right to be encouraged to develop their own strengths, interest and emerging skills at their own pace, in their own time.

That even though children are unique in their own right, their individuality cannot be separated from the family/community of which they are a part and that each child brings with them their own history, personal experiences and family beliefs.

That positive self esteem and a strong sense of self worth are important in and of themselves and are the basis for healthy physical, intellectual and social growth. During the first five years young children acquire the values and attitudes towards themselves and others that grow with them into adulthood.

Play is an important avenue for children's learning and through play they develop the skills and knowledge to make sense of their physical and social world.

Children are enthusiastic explorers and capable investigators. Whose thirst for knowledge is only limited by their surroundings and materials. Opportunities for growth of knowledge, skills and self-worth are provided when children ask questions, conduct their own investigations and make decisions about their own activities. Their creativity is a characteristic of the way they think and make choices; it emerges from multiple experiences including a sense of freedom to venture beyond the known.

Therefore I will:

Foster each child's uniqueness by looking at the whole child, taking into consideration all the influences on their behaviour, development and life.

Encourage each child to reach their full potential by taking advantage of naturally occurring learning opportunities, intentional teaching moments and planning for individual skills, developmental stages and interests.

Embrace and welcome each family/individual so that we may all share and benefit from the wealth of knowledge, skills and resources each individual brings.

Foster a sense of trust by listening to and showing respect towards children so that they feel safe, valued and cherished, enabling them to develop knowledgeable and confident self-identities.

Provide an environment where a strong sense of belonging is fostered through collaboration and open communication; where children develop the ability to form caring relationships where similarities and differences are recognized, respected and accepted as an important part of each child.

Support children's curiosity and wonder by endeavouring to change our surroundings and provide materials and resources which will stretch and challenge their imaginations, extend their knowledge and support their search for answers. 

Provide a range of activities and experiences where children can experiment with possibilities, become more flexible in their thinking and problem solving and learn to negotiate with others by extending their language and their desire to communicate and interact.

Guide children's learning by allowing them to take the initiative and to ask many, varied questions and by providing the time and the opportunity for children to develop and extend their play.

Endeavour to assist children to find within themselves the courage and the motivation to strive to achieve, to seek answers to their questions and ultimately to experience the joy of self-motivated learning.
